Choose Viking if having an included introductory excursion in each port makes your vacation easier. Choose Oceania if you like having more flexibility and may prefer to use a shore-excursion credit toward selected experiences—or choose the mealtime wine and beer amenity instead.
Dining: Oceania's signature strength
Oceania has made cuisine central to its identity. Its specialty restaurants are included, and the variety of restaurants, culinary programming and destination-inspired food experiences can be a major reason to choose the line.
Viking also includes alternative dining and offers a polished culinary experience, with regional dishes and Scandinavian influences complementing familiar favorites.
If food is one of the primary reasons you travel, I would give Oceania the edge. If dining is important but you are equally focused on cultural enrichment and a predictable onboard experience, Viking may be the stronger fit.
Shore excursions: Viking is simpler
Viking includes one complimentary shore excursion in every port of call. These included experiences are generally designed to introduce you to the destination, while optional excursions are available for travelers who want something more specialized.
Oceania offers a shore-excursion credit as one of its current amenity choices rather than automatically including an excursion in every port.
This is an important distinction for port-intensive itineraries. Travelers who like having a basic sightseeing plan ready each morning may appreciate Viking. Independent travelers who often arrange private guides or explore on their own may prefer Oceania’s flexibility.
Ships and onboard atmosphere
Viking Ocean ships are intentionally consistent. The Scandinavian design, adults-only policy, no-casino environment and emphasis on enrichment create a calm, recognizable experience from ship to ship.
Oceania also attracts an adult, sophisticated audience and now operates as an adults-only cruise line. Its ships vary more by class, giving travelers a choice between smaller vessels and newer, somewhat larger ships with expanded restaurant and public-space options.
If you love knowing exactly what kind of ship experience awaits you, Viking’s consistency is a strength. If you enjoy choosing among different ship sizes and restaurant mixes, Oceania offers more variation.
Staterooms and suites
Every Viking Ocean stateroom has a veranda, which makes the entry-level experience especially easy to understand. Oceania offers a wider range of stateroom and suite categories depending on the ship.
Rather than comparing cruise lines in the abstract, compare the actual accommodations available on the itinerary you want. A particularly appealing suite, veranda location or ship class can easily change the decision.
Enrichment and things to do onboard
Viking leans heavily into destination enrichment, lectures, cultural programming and its Nordic Spa. The overall tone is quiet and intellectually curious.
Oceania also offers enrichment, but culinary experiences are more prominent. On ships with The Culinary Center, hands-on cooking classes can be a highlight for food-focused travelers.
Neither line is trying to entertain you every minute. That is part of the appeal.
Price and value: compare the whole vacation
Do not compare Oceania and Viking by cruise fare alone. Look at the experiences you will actually buy: excursions, beverages, gratuities, specialty dining, Wi-Fi, airfare and pre- or post-cruise arrangements.
Viking’s included excursion in each port may create meaningful value for active sightseers. Oceania’s included gratuities, specialty dining and amenity choice can be more valuable for travelers who want flexibility.
The better question is not “Which line is cheaper?” It is “Which fare already includes the things I would otherwise pay for?”

But itinerary still comes first. A great itinerary on the “second-choice” cruise line can easily be a better vacation than an average itinerary on the line you thought you preferred.
