Oceania Sonata vs. Allura: What’s Different and Which Should You Book?

Compare size, guest capacity, dining, suites and the tradeoff between a new ship and an established one.

By Melissa Lagerquist · October 3, 2026 · 12 min read

Oceania Sonata and Oceania Allura share the same culinary, destination-focused brand, but they are not sister ships. Allura is a 1,200-guest Allura-class ship that entered service in 2025. Sonata debuts in 2027 as the first ship in a new class, carrying 1,390 guests with more tonnage, new suite categories and two newly announced dining concepts. Oceania’s Sonata ship page and Allura ship page provide the current specifications.

The practical decision is not simply “newer or older.” Sonata offers more novelty and more space on paper. Allura offers a known layout, fewer guests and an onboard product that has already been operating.

The quick answer

Quick answer

Choose Sonata if you want Oceania’s newest design, the Horizon or Penthouse Deluxe suite, or the newly announced La Table par Maîtres Cuisiniers de France and Nikkei Kitchen. Choose Allura if you prefer the more intimate 1,200-guest scale, want a ship with established guest feedback, or find a materially better itinerary or fare.

Neither ship is automatically the better cruise. Oceania’s itinerary and accommodation choices can outweigh the differences in hardware.

Is Sonata meaningfully larger?

Yes. Sonata has about 26 percent more gross tonnage and room for about 16 percent more guests than Allura. Gross tonnage measures enclosed volume, not weight. Dividing published tonnage by double-occupancy capacity produces roughly 61.9 tons per guest on Sonata versus 56.7 on Allura.

That calculation suggests more physical volume per guest, but it is an inference—not a promise of how crowded either ship will feel. Layout, traffic flow, venue size and actual occupancy matter. Allura’s lower guest count may still feel more intimate even if Sonata has more space on paper.

The dining differences

Sonata’s most visible point of differentiation is dining. Oceania has announced La Table par Maîtres Cuisiniers de France, described as an intimate French chef’s-table concept, and Nikkei Kitchen, focused on Peruvian-Japanese flavors. Allura’s current lineup emphasizes The Grand Dining Room, Polo Grill, Aquamar Kitchen, Terrace Café and an authentic Neapolitan trattoria. It also carries forward the line’s mixology program and all-veranda accommodation design. Oceania’s official Allura overview.

Choose Sonata if the two new restaurants are a meaningful part of your reason for traveling. Choose Allura if you already like Oceania’s established dining formula and do not need the newest concepts.

Suites: where Sonata creates a real difference

Both ships are all-veranda, so the entry decision begins at a higher baseline than on many cruise lines. Sonata introduces two named categories that do not exist on Allura: the Horizon Suite and Penthouse Deluxe Suite. Oceania describes Sonata’s suite collection as offering more light, openness and comfort, but the lived experience cannot be verified until the ship sails. Official Sonata accommodations overview.

Allura has a known progression from veranda staterooms through Penthouse, Oceania, Vista and Owner’s Suites. Travelers can draw on current deck plans, professional reviews and guest reports when choosing a location.

For either ship, category alone is not enough. Check what is above, below and across the hall; walking distance to dining; proximity to elevators; and whether the balcony orientation suits your route.

Itineraries may decide this comparison

Oceania says Sonata’s 2027–2028 inaugural season will move from the Mediterranean to the Caribbean, including ocean crossings. Official Sonata season overview. Allura’s program is already established across Europe and the Americas.

If one ship visits the ports you want at the right time of year, that advantage can be more valuable than a new restaurant. Compare port hours, sea-day balance and embarkation logistics—not only the headline destinations.

The new-ship tradeoff

Sonata buyers accept a degree of uncertainty. Renderings can change, early schedules can be adjusted and the crew needs time to develop a rhythm in new spaces. The upside is the chance to experience a new class when everything feels fresh.

Allura buyers give up some novelty but gain evidence. The ship has sailed since 2025, so its strengths, cabin quirks and traffic patterns are easier to research.

Neither choice is inherently safer or better. The decision depends on your tolerance for novelty and how important the newest design is to you.

What is still unknown about Sonata

As of October 2026, Oceania has announced core dimensions, guest capacity, all-veranda accommodations, new suite names and several dining venues. Detailed independent reviews, real passenger-flow observations and operational feedback will not exist until the ship enters service.

Treat claims about how Sonata “feels” as preliminary. The responsible comparison separates official specifications from assumptions based on renderings.

My verdict

Sonata is the more interesting ship; Allura may be the more predictable booking. Travelers who care about new dining and new suites should lean Sonata. Travelers who care most about a smaller guest count, proven operation or a specific itinerary should keep Allura firmly in the comparison.

The strongest booking decision comes from comparing a real sailing on each ship. A theoretical ship winner is less useful than knowing which itinerary, stateroom and fare fit your trip.

How many guests will Sonata carry?

Oceania lists capacity at 1,390 guests, compared with 1,200 on Allura. Official specifications.

Which ship is better for food?

Both are built around Oceania’s culinary positioning. Sonata adds La Table par Maîtres Cuisiniers de France and Nikkei Kitchen; whether those make it “better” is subjective.

Should I wait for Sonata reviews?

Wait if you need independent confirmation of layout, noise, service flow and venue capacity. Book earlier if a particular inaugural itinerary or suite is more important than having that evidence.
