It is less straightforward for someone who wants a large menu of excursions bundled into the advertised fare. Compare the exact route, suite location, touring budget and pre- or post-cruise plans—not just the starting price.

What kind of Alaska cruise is this?
EXPLORA III is not marketed as an expedition ship. Explora presents it as an ultra-elegant “floating hotel,” with a residential atmosphere and generous space. For Alaska, the ship adds a practical advantage: Explora highlights heated pools, indoor whirlpools and an Ocean Wellness spa measuring about 7,535 square feet (700 square metres), all useful when the weather is cool or wet. The itinerary and touring still provide the wilderness component. Explora's current Alaska collection describes small-group experiences led by local experts and options focused on glaciers, wildlife, landscapes and Indigenous or regional culture. Which route and ports should you choose?
Start with the route before comparing suites. A current seven-night example runs from Seward to Vancouver and calls at Sitka, Skagway, Wrangell and the Endicott/Tracy Arm fjord region; exact ports, order and availability vary by departure. A one-way itinerary also creates a logistical decision. Seward usually means arranging transportation through Anchorage and deciding whether to add time on land. Vancouver is simpler for many travelers but may still merit a pre-cruise hotel so a delayed flight does not jeopardize embarkation. Explora lists private transfers, air travel and bespoke hotel arrangements as optional pre- and post-Journey services on the itinerary page. - Glaciers: Explora highlights helicopter access to Mendenhall Glacier from Juneau, a small-boat experience near Hubbard Glacier and jet-boat outings toward LeConte or Shakes Glacier from Wrangell.

What is included on Explora Journeys in Alaska?
Explora's current standard list includes nine culinary experiences including in-suite dining; unlimited fine wines, champagne, premium spirits and nonalcoholic beverages; a welcome bottle of champagne plus one bottle each of wine and spirits in the suite; thermal-area access; group wellness, fitness and mindfulness activities; high-speed Wi-Fi; onboard gratuities; and port-to-city shuttles where required and available. That is a generous onboard package. It can make the final onboard account more predictable than a line that prices drinks, Wi-Fi and gratuities separately. It does not eliminate every possible extra.

Which Explora suite is best for Alaska?
The value starting point is an Ocean Terrace Suite. Explora describes this suite family with floor-to-ceiling windows, an oceanfront terrace furnished with a dining table and daybed, a lounge area, walk-in wardrobe, replenished minibar and a bathroom with walk-in shower and heated floors. An Ocean Grand Terrace Suite keeps many of those core features but expands the terrace to about 118 square feet (11 square metres) and is located on decks 6 and 7. That can be meaningful in Alaska if you expect to spend long stretches outside with binoculars, but it should still be priced against the best-located Ocean Terrace option. Do not choose solely by category name. Review the actual deck, position forward/midship/aft, nearby elevators, connecting doors, capacity and what is above and below. Explora publishes optional programs that combine the cruise with interior Alaska. Its three-night option links Seward with Anchorage, Denali and Talkeetna; a four-night option includes Fairbanks, Denali and Girdwood. The company also publishes five-night Canadian Rockies programs using Rocky Mountaineer's GoldLeaf service between Calgary and Vancouver, with Banff and Kamloops.
