EXPLORA IV and EXPLORA III are far more alike than their different launch dates might suggest. Explora Journeys currently lists the same headline statistics for both ships: 461 ocean-front suites, five heated pools, seven restaurants, 12 bars and lounges, and 1.25 guests per host. Official EXPLORA III details and official EXPLORA IV details.

That makes this a different kind of ship comparison. The central question is not which vessel has more venues or a better standard suite. It is whether you prefer EXPLORA III’s Alaska deployment and already-operating ship, or EXPLORA IV’s 2027 debut and Northern Europe-to-North America inaugural route.

The quick answer

Quick answer

Choose EXPLORA III for Alaska in summer 2027 or if you want a ship with real photographs and early guest feedback. Choose EXPLORA IV for a new-ship experience and its inaugural journeys in Northern Europe, the Baltic, Iceland, Greenland, Canada and the U.S. East Coast. Explora describes those regional plans in its Summer 2027 collection.

On current official evidence, do not choose IV because you expect a fundamentally different onboard product. The published suite count, pool count, dining count and service ratio match III.

What is the same

The ships share the same basic accommodation story: all ocean-front suites with private terraces, from Ocean Terrace and Ocean Grand Terrace Suites through Penthouses and Residences. Both publish an Owner’s Residence designed by Patricia Urquiola. Both list the same core venue totals and the same guest-to-host ratio.

Explora’s ship pages also show the same signature concepts across both vessels, including the Conservatory Pool & Bar, Chef’s Table and The Cellar. This matters because some promotional language can make a venue sound “exclusive” to the newest ship when the same concept is also presented for its sister vessel.

For most travelers, an Ocean Terrace Suite on III should be compared with the same category on IV by deck, position and live fare—not by assuming the newer ship automatically offers a larger or more complete room.

What is genuinely different

The launch timing

EXPLORA III is already sailing. EXPLORA IV is scheduled to enter service in summer 2027. Official EXPLORA IV page.

That means III offers evidence: actual photography, early reviews and operational experience. IV offers newness, but much of the pre-launch visual material remains a combination of photography and renderings. Explora explicitly notes on its suite pages that artist representations, finishes and furnishings are illustrative. EXPLORA IV accommodations.

The 2027 destinations

EXPLORA III makes the line’s Alaska debut from May to September 2027. EXPLORA IV begins with Northern Europe and the Baltic, then Iceland and Greenland, followed by North America’s East Coast and New England. Explora’s official Summer 2027 overview.

This is the decisive difference. If Alaska is the goal, III wins by default. If Iceland, Greenland or a fall East Coast voyage is the goal, IV becomes the relevant ship.

The inaugural factor

EXPLORA IV’s first season brings novelty and the satisfaction of being early. It also brings the usual new-ship unknowns: final venue execution, crew flow, small changes from renderings and limited independent reporting.

EXPLORA III has passed that first threshold. Its advantage is not age; it is information.

Are the suites different?

The published category names and core descriptions are substantially aligned. Both ship pages list Ocean Terrace Suites with floor-to-ceiling windows, lounge areas, terraces with a table and daybed, replenished minibars, espresso machines, walk-in wardrobes and heated bathroom floors. Explora also publishes the bed measurements in both metric and U.S. units: the standard king configuration is 180 by 200 centimeters, approximately 71 by 79 inches. Exact inventory and deck placement still matter. A seemingly small difference in location can affect motion, walking distance and the view from a terrace. The suite-category guide on this site explains the hierarchy: Explora Journeys Ocean Suites explained.

Which ship is better for Alaska?

EXPLORA III is the only relevant choice for Explora’s inaugural Alaska season. The line says III will sail Alaska from May through September 2027. Official Alaska announcement.

That does not make it the best luxury Alaska cruise for every traveler. Explora’s atmosphere, dining and resort-like public spaces should be compared with expedition intensity, included shore experiences and route details on other lines. See my EXPLORA III Alaska guide before deciding.

Which ship is better for Northern Europe and Greenland?

EXPLORA IV. Its inaugural program is specifically built around Northern Europe, the Baltic, Iceland and Greenland before moving to the East Coast of North America. That sequence gives travelers several ways to experience a new ship without choosing its very first sailing.

If you like IV’s destinations but not inaugural uncertainty, compare a later 2027 journey rather than the debut. By then, the crew will have more operating time while the ship remains new.

What is not yet known

As of October 2026, the official material does not establish a major quantitative difference between the ships. Both list the same suite and venue counts. Independent reports cannot yet confirm how IV’s spaces, acoustics, service flow or finishes compare in real operation.

If new venue details or revised deck plans appear before publication, this section should be updated. Until then, it would be misleading to invent a winner based on renderings.

My verdict

For summer 2027, choose the destination first. EXPLORA III is the Alaska ship. EXPLORA IV is the Northern Europe, Iceland, Greenland and East Coast ship. If both eventually offer an itinerary that works, III is the evidence-based choice and IV is the new-ship choice.

The onboard experience is likely to be closely related. The meaningful booking work is comparing journey length, port pattern, suite position, current promotion and air logistics.
