For most Virgin Voyages travelers, Essential is the best place to begin the comparison. Base is less expensive but highly restrictive. Premium adds the earliest standard-cabin dining window, the strongest Wi-Fi, an included Bar Tab and the most flexibility. The right answer still depends on the price difference for your sailing and how certain you are that your plans will not change.
Virgin introduced Base, Essential and Premium as its VoyageFair Choices for Sea Terrace cabins and below. These are fare tiers, not cabin categories. You first choose an Insider, Sea View or Sea Terrace cabin type, then compare the fares available for it. Virgin Voyages explains the current fare structure here.
The quick answer
- Choose Base when the lowest price matters most, your plans are firm and you accept no cabin, date or name changes.
- Choose Essential when you want a better dining-reservation window, Classic Wi-Fi and useful flexibility without paying for every Premium benefit.
- Choose Premium when you value Premium Wi-Fi, an included Bar Tab, earlier dining access, priority support and the broadest change options.
Those recommendations are based on the current feature differences published by Virgin, but prices vary by voyage. Always compare the actual upgrade cost shown for your cabin. See Virgin's VoyageFair announcement.

What all three fares include
The fare tier changes flexibility and selected benefits, but it does not remove Virgin's core onboard inclusions. Every tier includes dining at Virgin's main collection of eateries, an included level of Wi-Fi, group fitness classes, entertainment, soda, still and sparkling water, drip coffee and tea. Alcohol, specialty beverages, Shore Things, spa treatments and selected premium dining items can cost extra. Review Virgin Voyages' current inclusions.
Service gratuities are separate from the voyage fare. Virgin currently charges $22 per Sailor per night onboard or $20 per Sailor per night when prepaid. Prepaid service gratuities are nonrefundable. Once the service gratuity is covered, Virgin says it does not add separate tips to drinks, dining or spa services. See Virgin's service-gratuity policy.
Virgin Voyages Base fare
Base is the value-focused published fare. It includes Basic Wi-Fi for one active device per Sailor, and dining reservations open 15 days before sailing. It does not include a Bar Tab or priority support. Virgin's fare announcement details these Base benefits.
The important tradeoff is rigidity. Base payments are nonrefundable except for taxes and fees. There is no seven-day grace period, Future Voyage Credit, voyage-date change or name change. Virgin also does not permit a cabin change after the cabin is automatically assigned. Read the current cancellation and change rules and cabin-assignment policy.
Virgin Voyages Essential fare
Essential upgrades the connection to Classic Wi-Fi for one device per Sailor and opens dining reservations 45 days before sailing. That extra month can matter when you want popular dinner times. Compare Virgin's Wi-Fi levels and current dining windows.
Essential also adds meaningful flexibility, but “refundable as credit” does not mean you can receive a cash refund at any time. When the reservation is at least 120 days from sailing, Virgin provides a seven-day grace period after the deposit for a full refund. After that grace period, the deposit converts to Future Voyage Credit while other payments are refunded. From 119 to 45 days before sailing, voyage-fare payments can be transferred to Future Voyage Credit. Inside 44 days, the voyage fare is nonrefundable, although secondary Sailor names may be changed. Virgin publishes the complete timing rules here.
Virgin permits an Essential voyage-date change until 45 days before sailing, with the replacement voyage starting within one year of the original date. An automatically assigned cabin may also be changed if another eligible cabin is available. See the date-change policy and cabin policy.
Virgin Voyages Premium fare
Premium includes Premium Wi-Fi for two devices per Sailor, a 60-day dining-reservation window, an included Bar Tab and a dedicated pre-voyage support line. Virgin describes this tier as its option for greater convenience, benefits and flexibility. See Virgin's Premium description, Wi-Fi details and dining FAQ.
The included Bar Tab is beverage credit, not an unlimited drinks package. The amount displayed should be confirmed in the booking screen for your particular voyage. In the example captured for this guide, the Premium fare showed a $300 drink credit per cabin. View the full booking-screen example.
Premium follows the same limited cash-refund framework as Essential when the reservation is at least 120 days from sailing. It provides broader options later, including the ability to change any Sailor name. From 119 to 45 days, Virgin permits eligible payments to move to Future Voyage Credit, a voyage-date change or any name change; inside 44 days, any Sailor name may still be changed, although the voyage fare is nonrefundable. Check Virgin's exact Premium cancellation and change rules.
How to decide whether the upgrade is worth it
Do not decide from the tier names alone. Compare the total cabin price for all Sailors, then subtract the value of benefits you would otherwise purchase. The remaining difference is what you are paying for earlier dining access and flexibility.
- Calculate the total difference between Base and Essential for the cabin, not merely the per-Sailor headline.
- Decide whether you can comfortably absorb the entire loss if a Base booking must be canceled.
- Compare Essential with Premium and count only benefits you genuinely expect to use.
- Confirm the Bar Tab amount, service gratuities, taxes and fees in the complete booking summary.
- Read the restrictions once more before paying.

Your fare also affects cabin-location flexibility
Virgin automatically assigns the cabin after you select the cabin type. With Base, that cabin cannot be changed. With Essential or Premium, another eligible cabin may be selected later if availability permits. Lock It In is more restrictive because the exact cabin can be assigned closer to sailing and cannot be changed. Virgin confirms these cabin rules in its current FAQ.
A useful benefit of booking through my First Mate link
If you choose Essential or Premium, send me your confirmation after booking. I can review the assigned cabin and search the available inventory for an eligible location that better matches your priorities, such as a more central position, shorter walks, convenient elevator access, less potential motion or greater separation from busy public areas.
A better location is never guaranteed, and I cannot override the selected fare. What I can do is examine the choices, explain the tradeoffs and help request a permitted change when a suitable cabin is available.
What about a Lock It In rate?
Lock It In is separate from the standard Base, Essential and Premium comparison. It is a guarantee booking: Virgin guarantees the selected category or higher but assigns the exact cabin location closer to sailing. It is nonrefundable and does not allow cabin, voyage-date or name changes. Dining opens 15 days before sailing and the included Wi-Fi level is Basic for standard cabins. See Virgin's cabin-assignment rules, cancellation rules, dining windows and Wi-Fi policy.
Choose it only when the savings outweigh the loss of control. If cabin location, connecting rooms or travel flexibility matter, the lower price may not represent better value.
Do these fares apply to RockStar suites?
Virgin states that VoyageFair Choices apply when booking Sea Terrace cabins and below. Non-Lock It In RockStar and Mega RockStar suites follow their own suite terms, and their dining reservations currently open 120 days before sailing. See which bookings use VoyageFair Choices and Virgin's dining windows.
